Q1. What is ITOP?
A1. The Inter-Island Tourism Policy (ITOP) Forum is a global cooperation platform of island regional
governments dedicated to advancing sustainable developmentin tourism-based island regions. As a network of subnational island governments, ITOP Forum functions as a pioneer in shaping innovative policies for a sustainable and resilient tourism landscape.
Q2. Who can become an ITOP member?
A2. Subnational island governments where tourism is a key economic driver are eligible to apply.
Q3. What are the benefits of joining ITOP?
A3. Members can:
- Participate in international tourism forums
- Share tourism policies and best practices among island regional governments
- Promote their destinations globally through travel mart opportunities
- Develop tourism cooperation projects with UN Tourism
- Build international tourism networks with PATA and other global partners
Q4. How can a regional government apply for membership?
A4. Interested organizations may contact the ITOP Secretariat at itop@ijto.or.kr and submit membership application documents.
Q5. Is there a membership fee?
A5. No. ITOP currently does not charge a membership fee.
Q6. Can members host an ITOP forum?
A6. Yes. Member regions may propose to host ITOP events and forums. Host destinations are selected through voting among member regions approximately 3–5 years in advance.
Q7. What are the responsibilities of a host region?
A7. The host region cooperates with the ITOP Secretariat in Jeju to organize the annual forum.
The host region is responsible for event operation costs, local arrangements, and official delegate hospitality.
Q8. Are online participation options available?
A8. Yes. Working-level meetings or annual meetings are conducted online. However, in-person participation by governors and senior representatives is encouraged for the main ITOP Forum.
Q9. How long does the membership application process take?
A9. Applications are generally reviewed within several weeks after submission.
Q10. What activities does ITOP organize?
A10. ITOP organizes annual forums, policy exchanges, cultural programs, collaborative tourism initiatives, and business networking opportunities.
